Director’s Note
It has been a joy to direct Shrek the Musical JR., a show full of life lessons. Throughout the show, we see various characters learning to be themselves and celebrate each other’s differences. They learn to work together and stand up for what is right. They learn about true friendship and about true love. Shrek himself learns all these things and more, as he begins his journey with one mission in mind and gradually, and unexpectedly, changes his priorities.
Like Shrek, sometimes our own journey through life doesn’t go the way we expect. Shrek begins, frankly, with selfish motives. He just wants to be left alone on his swamp. To get what he wants, he is forced to accept multiple intrusions to his quest. Life often brings unexpected troubles that we must accept to continue with life.
Shrek is reluctant each time he is presented with what he sees as an obstacle. But as he softens toward his companions, he learns friendship, love, and community. He is ultimately much better off for the obstacles he had hoped to avoid.
So, when you set out on a quest, embrace the struggles, they will undoubtedly teach you something, and you may end up better in the end!
